Giftsandhome.net caught up with the prolific, iconic fashion designer Zandra Rhodes at the recent PG Live show, where she launched a debut range of gift stationery and greeting cards on the Museums & Galleries stand.
Zandra, how would you describe yourself in three words?
“Colourful, exotic and pink!”
Can you tell us what your home is like?
“I live in a Rainbow penthouse on top of my fashion and textile museum in London which is painted bright orange and pink. It was the first building in Europe to be designed by Ricardo Legorreta. I also have a home in San Diego.”
Of all the famous people you’ve designed for over the past half century – from Royalty to movie stars – who is the most memorable?
“The actress Lauren Bacall. I fitted her in my tiny studio and she stepped on a pin!”
Over your long career, what’s been the best piece of advice that you’ve ever received?
“It came from the distinguished designer Eddie Pond who went on to work for Paperchase. He told me, ‘your designs stand out like a sore thumb, so you’re either going to make it very big or fall flat on your face.’”
What advice would you give to someone today?
“Don’t give up. It doesn’t get any easier, even when you get to 78 like me.”
With a globe-trotting work schedule that would leave most people half your age breathless, can you tell us about your new licensing venture with Museums & Galleries that made its debut at PG Live?
“It’s a range of gift stationery and greeting cards and I’m thrilled by the marvellous job the Museums & Galleries team has done in interpreting my designs onto the products.”
Of all your designs, is there a favourite?
“Yes, Lipsticks.”
What type of gifts do you like to receive?
“I love anything that’s functional and has a purpose.”
What’s in the pipeline for the rest of the year?
“There are so many projects, but among them is a collaboration with Ikea in in Sweden where I will be launching a range of textiles and objects in colorful patterns.”
