An Audience With The King

David Austin, owner of Austins department store in Newton Abbot – winner of The Greats Awards 2022 Best Department Store Retailer of Gifts category – recently attended a reception in the presence of King Charles.

The event was held at Buckingham Palace, with David among the retailers invited to the reception in recognition of the store’s contribution to the UK economy as a small business.

“We were in a group of only four retailers and were able to talk to the King who was extraordinarily personable, interested and engaging,” highlights David. “It was such a privilege. Everyone at Austins has been excited and thrilled that this recognition and honour was extended to us.”

From humble beginnings, four Austins stores dominate the market town’s landmark ‘clock tower’ square, making the retailer the largest independent, family-owned department store in the South West.

“My dream was always to create a mini John Lewis for the West country,” David told GiftsandHome.net.
