Shaping The Future Of Independent Retail

This Wednesday (16 October), marks the British Independent Retailers Association’s (Bira’s) landmark conference, celebrating 125 years of supporting independent retailers across the UK, to include gift retailers. The event will be taking place at One Great George Street in London.

Explains Andrew: “The conference serves as a crucial platform for our sector to gain insights, share experiences, and prepare for the future of retail.

The agenda will address the most pressing issues facing independent retailers today. From sustainability and technology to the changing face of Britain’s high streets,  industry experts, government representatives, and successful retailers will share their knowledge and experiences.

A keynote speaker will be Wayne Hemingway MBE, who  will provide an overview of independent retail, place development, and sustainability. His expertise in design and town centre development will offer valuable insights into creating attractive shop floors and implementing successful initiatives. The session will feature case studies and practical resources that attendees can apply to their own business.

In addition, a highlight of the conference will be a panel discussion with a Government minister on key issues affecting independent retailers.

Plus, Ojay Macdonald, ceo of the Association of Town Centre Managers, will share key insights into the impact of good management on high streets and what independent retailers can do to help create thriving communities. This will be followed by a panel discussion hosted by Wayne Hemingway.

There will also be a session with experts from Google and Global Payments whichwill demystify how technology and AI are reshaping retail, showing how smaller retailers can leverage them to compete with larger chains. The focus will be on practical applications that can help grow a business, proving that technology can be a positive force when used effectively.

Also among the speakers will be Victoria Robertshaw, owner of Green Street, will lead a session on embracing sustainability and the circular economy. The session will demonstrate how sustainability can be an opportunity rather than a cost for a business.

“As we celebrate 125 years of Bira, we’re not just looking back at our proud history,” says ceo Andrew Goodacre. “We’re equipping delegates with the knowledge and connections needed to thrive in an ever-changing retail environment.”
