Jonathan Faull, co-owner of Uno in The Mumbles, Swansea, tells GiftsandHome.net what’s changed since he and his wife Sue first opened their doors in 2008.
What made you open a gift shop 10 years ago?
“I was working in logistics at the time, and opened Uno as another business enterprise. It sort of grew from there. Initially, we were very focused on home fragrancing products, especially candles. Ten years on, the focus has switched to jewellery, where we currently offer product from over 20 suppliers.”
What else do customers pop into the shop for when they’re looking for a gift?
“We’re renowned for providing customers with a great range of high quality items. Aside from jewellery we offer designer homewares, home and travel fragrance products, cosmetics, designer fashion clothing and accessories, journals, gift stationery and greetings cards.”
What’s your main bugbear as an independent retailer today?
“Business rates. Until the government manages to sort them out, it will continue to be increasingly tough on the high street. However, we fully intend to keep going, and will be continuing to offer quality giftware that differentiates us from the multiples.”
What’s been a special highlight for Uno over the past decade?
“Being shortlisted as a finalist in The Greats Independent Gift Retailer of the Year Midlands & Wales category in 2009 and 2018. We’re currently proudly displaying The Greats 2018 Finalist logo on our website!”
What do you love most about being in the gift industry?
“It would have to be dealing with so many excellent suppliers. We have a really good relationship with them, and it’s a real pleasure to do business with companies such as Sophie Allport and Powder, as well as our numerous jewellery suppliers. Also, gifts is a friendly industry, with the people we work with becoming friends.”
