Searches for the ‘best housewarming gift 2021’ were up 600% last year, showing the importance that people place on finding the gifts that they hope that their friends and family will appreciate, says new research from Vonhaus.
Although, unsurprisingly, money topped the most wanted gifts list, house plantsmade it into third place – tapping into the current trend for both real and faux greenery – with crockery, fragranced candles and glassware also in the top ten.

The most wanted housewarming gifts are:
- Money (28%)
- Gift cards (27%)
- House plants (24%)
- DIY tools (17%)
- Crockery (17%)
- Alcohol (16%)
- Scented candles (16%)
- Basket of tea and coffee (13%)
- Food (12%)
- Glassware (11%)
Conversely, among the least favourite gifts were air fresheners, calendars and teddy bears.
“First-time buyers want gifts that add value to their homes,” states Emily Caloe, senior buyer for Vonhaus. “So when friends and family are trying to think of the perfect gift, they need to stick to practical and functional items as opposed to products which add clutter, or items which are gifted without much thought behind them.”
According to the survey, on average, first-time buyers spend £1,397 within the first 12 months of moving in.
