One of Joe Davies’ vintage Shudehill musical carousels was featured on the popular BBC 1 TV show The Repair Shop last week, (13 November), showcasing the meticulous restoration process that brings timeless treasures back to life.
Chloe Foster brought in the carousel which was given to her by her mother. She has celebral palsy and was in and out of hospital as a child, with her mum buying her the carousel to help to keep her occupied during the long hospital appointments. Chloe played it over and over again, but it was several years since the toy had last worked, and one of the horses had broken off. As an adult and getting her own place, she wanted to be able to put the working carousel out on display.
“The cherished carousel showed how important a simple gift can be, especially when loved ones are going through a tough time or they just need a little something to make them smile,” Paul Hooker, managing director of Joe Davies, told GiftsandHome.net.
“Watching The Repair Shop breathe new life into one of our carousels was fascinating and a pleasure to watch, eclipsed only by the joy the carousel clearly gave the owner and her delight at having it restored. The Repair Shop is a great programme, filled with passionate and skilled craftspeople. Seeing a Shudehill item from yesteryear feature was very rewarding.”
