Williams of Audlem, founded in 1862, is a family run business, based in the village of Audlem in Cheshire.
Judy, can you tell us about the positives for Williams of Audlem in 2019?
“Entering The Greats 2019 awards and winning our regional final – Independent Gift Retailer of the Year – North & Northern Ireland – gave us a massive boost in terms of recognition from both suppliers and customers, as well as a renewed enthusiasm for pushing the business forward, despite the current political and economic circumstances.
“Plus, at the 2019 trade shows we attended, guest speakers, both well known and lesser known, proved to be a chance to meet and share knowledge with fellow traders.”

What was your business strategy for 2019?
“Economic uncertainty forced us to review and analyse our business. As a result, we dropped some old lines, invested in others, and keenly negotiated contracts with our service providers for electric, debit/credit card transactions, accountancy services and business insurance etc. We also worked closely with other retailers to promote local events that generated both footfall and interest in shopping local.”
What are your views on 2020?
“The high street will continue to be a tough environment so retailers will need to generate business for themselves by positively engaging with customers, fellow shopkeepers, the local community, social and traditional media and suppliers. Trade is cyclical so it will be important to use the downturns positively to focus and reassess every aspect of the business to be ready for the next upturn.”
