Socks Rock This Christmas

Good news for gift-led sock suppliers is that the latest survey of 1,500 Britons, carried out by footwear fashion retailer SockShop, has revealed that 85% of Gen Z – 18-24 year olds – would either appreciate (48%) or greatly appreciate (24%) socks as a gift in their Christmas stocking.

“We’re hailing socks as the unsung hero of Christmas, and we’re pleased to see young people are driving this newfound appreciation for the humble sock,” commented SockShop’s website manager David Rigby.

Continued David: “Christmas is our busiest time of year with orders for socks coming in from all over the world, so it’s great to see that people enjoy receiving them just as much as other more expensive options.”

Gen Z also emerged as the age group most in need of socks, with 7.6% claiming they never purchase socks for themselves, with those that do spending a maximum of 99p per pair.

The results of the survey also revealed 23% of all respondents receive socks as a gift more than once a year. Despite this, 48% of respondents said they would appreciate socks as a gift, while 24% said they would greatly appreciate receiving them.

At the other end of the age spectrum however, individuals aged between 65 and 74 years old were the least appreciative when it came to socks, with 10.4% admitting they would not appreciate receiving socks at all as a gift.

“It’s interesting to see is that it’s younger people in particular – who you might associate with wanting higher value, maybe tech-based gifts – who would be most appreciative of a good pair of socks this year,” David highlighted.
