According to the latest annual Rightmove survey, St Ives on the North Cornish coast, is the happiest place to live in Britain, with over 21,000 people surveyed for the company’s Happy At Home Index, to discover how they feel about where they live.
The town boasts a picturesque harbour, beautiful beaches and coastal walks. It is also a surfing hotspot, as well as a magnet for foodies and art lovers, with many people moving to the area or buying second homes.
“It was lovely to read what we already knew, that St Ives is a happy place to live, but it is also a speal place to visit,” says Kieron Cockley, co-owner of gift and lifestyle store Brocante which boasts a portfolio of six retail outlets, with a further two stores opening shortly, to include a second shop in St Ives. (In addition to the current St. Ives store, there are two shops in Fowey, and stores in Mevagissey, Charleston and Perranporth).
“The views take you breath away, no matter how often you see them, but the abundance of amazing restaurants and shops makes it a vibrant and bustling town,” continues Kieron. “It’s got a high street that’s alive and the heart of a community, which is so important. There is something for everyone – arts, crafts, surfing, walking the list is endless – and it was behind our decision to expand and open a second shop in this happy town.”
Other towns that made this year’s top five were: Galashiels in Scotland (in second place); Woodbridge in the East of England (in third place); Hexham in the North East (in fourth place) and Perth in Scotland (in fifth place).
Location criteria is based on factors that include a sense of belonging, the proximity to green spaces, local amenities and a community spirit.
